Practice makes perfect

In 2018 I began to see my smartphone in a different way. I realised I no longer needed a ‘real camera’ and could create video using the device I had in my pocket.

So, I got to work! Capturing footage and editing using apps that were free on my iPhone. One of my first creations was an explainer video demonstrating how to make a cup of tea. I had no equipment and hadn’t thought about filmmaking techniques in a long time.

In 2024, I had to make the same video for a university assignment. This time I had equipment so could capture smoother shots with better lighting.

Why am I telling you this?

Well, like anything, the more you do something the better you get at it. Practice improves every element of video creation; planning, production and editing. Experience allows you to:

  • choose shots that convey your story
  • look at the composition of shots
  • use transitions to add visual interest and convey time passing
  • add movement to focus your audiences attention
  • engage other senses
  • include stock assets to enhance the audio
  • select the right equipment

Don’t let your first attempts at video creation stop you. It’s a journey, as you can see from these examples, skills develop and videos improve the more you practice.

The most important thing is to have fun along the way.
